Bitcoin dominance

4 min read

Bitcoin dominance is Bitcoin's share of the whole crypto market: its market cap divided by the total market cap of all coins. At 60%, Bitcoin is worth 60% of everything tracked, and every other coin together is worth 40%.

Why it changes

  • Bitcoin's price moves more or less than other coins' prices. This is the main reason.
  • Stablecoins grow or shrink. They count in the total, so when holders move into stablecoins, every other coin's share falls, Bitcoin's included.
  • New coins are added to the total, and some leave it.

Reading it carefully

You'll often hear that falling dominance means “money is moving into other coins”. Sometimes it is. But dominance can also fall because Bitcoin fell faster than others, or because the stablecoin share rose while everything fell. Look at the total market cap and the stablecoin share alongside it before drawing a conclusion, and remember that none of these figures says what happens next.
